Duràn, Simón ben Zemah. Mallorca (Islas Baleares), 1361 - Argel (Argelia), 1444. Médico, rabino.
Hijo de Astruc Zemah Duràn y hermano del médico Astruc Duràn. Ejerció como médico en Mallorca, hasta que tuvo que exiliarse a raíz de las algaradas antijudias de 1391. Emigró al Norte de África, instalándose en Argel, donde aunque siguió dedicándose a la medicina, desempeñó diversos cargos religiosos, llegando a ser el rabino de su comunidad y un prestigioso consultor de materias rabínicas.
Es autor de veintitrés obras de tipo religioso, entre las que destacan sus Responsa. Otro de sus textos más conocidos es el Magen Avot (Escudo de los Padres). Dicha obra influenció al filósofo judío Joseph Albo. Su importancia radica en reducir los trece artículos de fe de Maimónides a tres dogmas esenciales (existencia de Dios, origen divino de la Ley Judía y realidad de la recompensa y retribución divina). En sus textos aparecen frecuentes reflexiones y argumentos basados en sus conocimientos médicos. Buena parte de sus obras y comentarios fueron repetidamente editados en las principales comunidades judías europeas.
